Immigration laws in the country
There are certain regulations and laws to control foreigners exiting and entering the country’s territory. For instance, Law Number 6 created in 1973 as modified by Federal Law Number 13 of 1996, encompasses the laws of immigration regarding the residency and entry of ex-pats to the UAE.
In addition, the UAE government authorized various regulations under various ministerial orders and decrees. One of the most relevant is the Decree Number 360 of 1997 that issues the Executive Bylaw.
In the same vein, foreigners require a valid visa to legally enter the country; this is defined as “permission to be posted on the travel permit or the passport of foreigners which will allow them to enter the country”. Thus, this must accompany by all persons included in the passport unless the specified visa names the beneficiaries.
Visas allow individuals to enter the UAE for temporary periods and some of them are renewable. Thus, there are certain visas foreigners can obtain before entering the UAE and they depend on the purpose of entry; this is established in Article 8 of the Immigration law.

Type of visas in the UAE
There are various types of visas in the UAE. Thus, these visas have subtle differences in the procedures. That is to say, choosing a type of visa will depend on the purpose of your visit to the country:
30-day Tourist visa
The government issues this visa for individuals visiting the country for leisure purposes. Moreover, this visa is valid for 58 days from the date of issue, it also grants the holder an entre permit of 1 month. This is required for individuals arriving from a country that does not fall in the category of Visa-Free Entry or does not have a Visa on Arrival agreement with the UAE.
90-Day Tourist Visa
This visa is issued for a period of 30 or for a period of 90 days depending on the plan of the individual. However, they can choose between a Multiple Entry Long Term Visa or a Single-Entry Long-Term type.
Service/14 Days visa
The government of the UAE issues this visa for individuals wishing to stay for 14 days and has return tickets. That is to say, this visa is issued for the following people and their family members accompanying them:
- Sales managers.
- Account auditors.
- Corporate delegations.
- Company representatives.
- Or those needing to visit the UAE for commercial purposes.
Entry Permit for Patients and their Companions
This type of visa is for foreign patients needing to visit Dubai for medical treatment. Certainly, a medical facility or hospital must sponsor the. However, there are 2 varieties of this permit. Firstly, a single-entry permit for 90 days. Thus, the patient must plan this visa within 60 days from the issue of the permit. This visa can be extended.
Secondly, a multiple-entry permit with the same benefits but with the option to extend in a multiple-entry visa.
E-Visa for Residents from GCC – GCC Residents and their companions
Certainly, individuals can apply for this visa online. Therefore, they must do this before they arrive in the country and they need a sponsor with them. Similarly, this permit is valid for 30 days and the holder has the option to extend this permit for another 30 days.
There are 2 different types of this visa, a 96-hour visa, and a 48-hour visa; they are sponsored by airlines based in the country.
This type of visa is for aspiring students wishing to study in Universities or Colleges in the UAE. Similarly, this visa is available for 1 year and requires further proof that the individual will continue studying in the country. In addition, the government introduced a new type of student visa in November 2018 applicable for 5 years.
